Linux Based PostmarketOS Now Works on More Than 200 Mobile Devices

PostmarketOS, an Alpine Linux-based free and open source operating system, now supports more than 200 mobile devices. PostmarketOS was presented to users for the first time with the source code published on GitLab on May 6, 2017.

According to new information from Tuxphone, PostmarketOS, an Alpine Linux-based open source operating system, runs smoothly on more than 200 mobile devices, including phones and tablets. This is a remarkable success for the Linux world.

Since its inception in 2017, PostmarketOS has grown steadily in the number of devices every year, reaching a crucial milestone in just three years, surpassing support for 200 devices. On the other hand, other Linux based mobile operating systems such as Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish OS and Plasma mobile are also very successful, but for now they cannot appeal to a broad audience like PostmarketOS.

If we look at the numbers, Ubuntu Touch currently supports 23 devices. Sailfish can be used on very few devices such as Sony Xperia 10 and Gemini PDA. Under the high popularity of PostmarketOS are simple installation methods that help users easily move Linux directly to their devices. It also offers the freedom to run user interfaces like Plasma Mobile, MATE, GNOME, Xfce and Phosh.

We recently witnessed that a user managed to install PostmarketOS on iPhone 7. Just a few years ago, it was considered totally impossible considering Apple’s software garden surrounded by high walls, but now anyone who owns the iPhone 7 can install PostmarketOS on their devices by following the developer-shared instructions at project-insanity.org.

Of course, it is not easy for PostmarketOS to be an ambitious alternative to Android and iOS, but the increase of projects like PostmarketOS can make the mobile operating system world gain another player. You can find the list of devices supported by PostmarketOS here.
